As Needed for Pain: A Memoir of Addiction

by Dan Peres

An unfamiliar level of comfort and calm came over me.

The marriage didn't start out this way. There were no lies - at least for a couple of days.

The meeting wasn't what I was expecting, even though I had no idea what to expect.

I had never been the life of the party, but I'd learned how to work a room.

the most interesting thing about him - to a young boy like me, anyway - was the fact that his first name was Dick.

Plus-ones gave me anxiety. They slowed me down. They wanted to be treated like humans.

Both she and Sarah saved my life. Sarah for having the courage the throw me out and the wisdom to sound an alarm. And my mom for having the stretch to watch her youngest son fall apart right in front of her eyes and the grace to calmly pick up the pieces.

Everything that I write about in this book actually happened. (Sorry, Mom.)

Keepsakes of the world I both loved and loved to hate.

"It's amazing that you're still alive, Dan."
I was scared, but I also felt a sense of pride.

Mornings are the enemy of the addict.
